The Factory Theatre in suburban Sydney, Australia, on Saturday hosted a 25th anniversary tribute to The Cure’s ninth album Wish that was headlined by Steve Kilbey of The Church, and featured a number of Sydney-area musicians performing songs off that record and Robert Smith and Co.’s back catalog.

For this week’s installment of Vintage Video, we present a real treasure for fans of The Cure: about a half-hour’s worth of footage of the band rehearsing its Prayer Tour set at Bray Studios in Berkshire, England, in April of 1989, the month before Disintegration was released and the band headed out on tour.

The Cure appears poised to celebrate this year’s edition of Record Store Day with vinyl picture-disc reissues of 2001’s Greatest Hits and a standalone release of the Acoustic Hits set that was included as a bonus disc in early pressings of the CD version of that best-of set. The two double-LP sets are expected to be released April 21.

The list of Cure releases that Robert Smith has promised would come out in 2010 and beyond is quite long, and includes a new studio album, a new remix collection, DVD reissues of old concert films, a new series of live DVD releases and a box set of material recorded for the BBC. Here’s a rundown of what might have been.

They hadn’t played together in The Cure since the late ’80s, but Lol Tolhurst — the band’s founding drummer, who later moved to keyboards — and Pearl Thompson — who played guitar during three different stints in the group — recently reunited in a recording studio, according to Facebook and Instagram posts by Thompson.

Time for what’s becoming a regular Vintage Video repeat: While we’ve posted this before, The Cure’s Robert Smith has yet to follow through with his announcement of a DVD release of “The Cure in Orange,” so, as it remains sadly out of print, we once again present the full 1987 concert film.
