For a band that broke big back in 1988 with a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane,” it’s fitting that the Cowboy Junkies and their label Latent Recordings are treating fans to a monthly series of free downloads of interpretations of some of their favorite songs.

The Cure delivered a marathon 40-song set tonight at London’s Eventim Apollo that included a full performance of 1984’s The Top, the live debut of rare B-side “A Man Inside My Mouth” and the reintroduction of songs not played live in decades. The band will perform again Monday and Tuesday nights.

The Cure will warm up for its three-night stand at London’s Hammersmith Apollo next week with a pair of special guest appearances on Thursday and Friday at the Brian and Robin’s Christmas Compendium of Reason benefit concert, performing “a small clutch of ‘happy hits'” both nights.

This week’s new releases include a new live album and DVD from Depeche Mode, a Paul McCartney cover by The Cure, a new best-of from David Bowie, Nick Cave’s “20,000 Days on Earth” film, new albums from Bryan Ferry and Einstürzende Neubauten, and a collection of 1988 demos from Fugazi.

The Cure today announced a pair of Christmas concerts at London’s Hammersmith Eventim Apollo next month, promising two-and-a-half-hour shows that will find the band “playing songs drawn from their entire 37 year old catalogue including deep cuts, pop songs, fan favourites and surprises galore.”
