Sad news today for fans of Bill Paxton, the actor known for iconic mid-’80s supporting roles in “Weird Science” and “Aliens” who went on to star in blockbusters like “Twister” and “Apollo 13.” The 61-year-old died Saturday due to complications from surgery, his family announced today.

Classic synthpop duo Erasure — Andy Bell and Vince Clarke — this week announced plans to release their 17th studio album this spring. The 10-track World Be Gone, due out May 19 on Mute Records, will be the group’s first new album since 2014’s The Violet Flame.

The John Darnielle-led Mountain Goats this week announced their 16th studio album, a guitar-less record called Goths that, as its title suggests, celebrates the dark musical genre: “the friends whose bands never made it out of Fender’s Ballroom, the Gene Loves Jezebels of the world.”

Echo & The Bunnymen plans to release on 180-gram vinyl a 1985 live set that was recorded in Sweden — but only if enough fans vote for it on the Run Out Groove imprint, which uses crowdsourcing to determine which projects to press each month.

Fishbone, long-running masters of the genre mashup, stopped by Seattle’s KEXP radio station just two days after the election last fall to perform a four-song, 30-minute in-studio session. Host Kevin Cole gets the band started by saying, “I know I could use some funk to get me out of my post-election funk.”

The Pixies this morning nearly doubled the length of their North American tour in support of last year’s Head Carrier, revealing 19 new dates this September and October to supplement the already announced 23-date run in April and May. Plus, they added a new Baltimore show on May 14.

Reunited shoegaze legends Ride today debuted their first new music in 21 years, releasing the song “Charm Assault” that presumably is a taste of the band’s as-yet-announced fifth studio album, which is expected out sometime this summer. The new song is produced by Erol Alkan and mixed by Alan Moulder.

The Dream Syndicate plans to release its first new album in 29 years, a collection that bandleader Steve Wynn has revealed will feature a guest vocal by founding bassist Kendra Smith — who has sat out the ongoing reunion, but agreed to appear on a song Wynn calls “the perfect coda to the record.”
