Having taken their name from a New Order video, The Killers have, not surprisingly, shown a predilection toward covering songs by classic alternative acts, including Joy Division, The Smiths, Morrissey and, of course, New Order. Robert Smith, founder and only constant of The Cure, has been tapped to hand-pick the lineup for the 25th installment of London’s prestigious Meltdown festival this June, following in the footsteps of past curators such as David Bowie, Yoko Ono, Morrissey, David Byrne, Nick Cave and more. Some personal news from Reeves Gabrels — guitarist for The Cure and former David Bowie sideman — got major play today, as his wedding to Susan Van Wie Kastan, a marketing communications consultant, landed a write-up in the New York Times’ wedding section. No word whether Robert Smith will be there.

Film director Tim Pope finally let the cat out of the bag, today announcing plans to collaborate with Robert Smith on a “feature-length, chronological documentary of The Cure’s history from the 1970s via present day to the future” — a project that promises to include never-before-seen footage.

After weeks of speculation about the band’s plans for 2018, The Cure today announced a giant 40th anniversary concert next summer in London’s Hyde Park with support from Interpol, Goldfrapp, Editors, Ride, Slowdive, The Twilight Sad and more to be announced. Tickets are available now via pre-sale.

Now we’ve got our first confirmation that something is indeed in the works to mark next year’s 40th anniversary, courtesy of film director Tim Pope, the man behind some of The Cure’s most iconic music videos (“Close To Me,” “The Love Cats”) and the full-length concert film “The Cure in Orange.”

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of The Cure’s recording debut, a milestone that’s already got fans wondering whether bandleader Robert Smith is preparing something special — speculation both aided and fueled by social media postings from current and former members.

Nearly 1,000 fans of The Cure contributed video and photos to a project by a Polish fansite to stitch together an enormous amateur multicam of the band’s Oct. 20, 2016, concert in Łódź, Poland — and they’re now offering the nearly 3-hour film as a free download to fellow fanatics. Frankie Rose, a former member of indie-pop groups including Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls, has recorded a front-to-back cover of The Cure’s 1980 sophomore album Seventeen Seconds that will be made available next month to members of the Sounds Delicious vinyl subscription service.
