What appears to be a treasure trove of aging tapes recorded by legendary postpunk producer Martin Hannett — including material by Joy Division, New Order, The Psychedelic Furs and Magazine — have been “rescued” from a garbage bin and are now being put up for sale by Hannett’s former personal assistant.
Back in 2008, the BBC first aired an hour-long radio documentary on the life and work of post-punk guitar legend John McGeoch, who played with Siouxsie and the Banshees, Public Image Ltd. and Magazine, among others. The Buzzcocks staged the first of two ‘Back to Front’ concerts last night, performing music from three different eras of the group’s history with three different lineups — including a closing set that saw the return of original frontman Howard Devoto, who hadn’t appeared with the band in more than 33 years.
This month’s Auto Reverse mixtape includes brand-new music from Killing Joke, Paul Weller and The Stranglers, plus favorites old and new(ish) from The House of Love, New Order, Magazine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Kate Bush, The Psychedelic Furs and much more.
Following up on last fall’s vintage Jim Reid mix, Demon Music Group — the label behind the new Jesus and Mary Chain reissues — posted a new mix by ex-JAMC rhythm section Bobby Gillespie and Douglas Hart representing what was on their tour-bus mixtapes during the band’s early days.
This month’s mixtape includes new and previously unreleased music from Paul Weller, Peter Murphy, The Lucy Show and Hussey-Regan, featuring The Mission’s Wayne Hussey — plus some older favorites by the likes of The Wild Swans, Magazine, The Stone Roses, Orange Juice, Revenge and The Alarm.
More than 30 years after leaving the band he co-founded, original frontman Howard Devoto will rejoin the Buzzcocks for part of the punk legends’ two ‘Back to Front’ concerts in Manchester and London next May, shows that will feature three different lineups of the band performing music from their respective eras.
