For fans of Depeche Mode’s 1989 concert documentary ‘101,’ here’s a real treat: An eight-minute promo reel of director D.A. It’s Michael Stipe’s birthday today — he’s 52 — so we’re cracking open the Vintage Video vault to bring you a 30-year-old R.E.M. concert, filmed Oct. 10, 1982, at The Pier in Raleigh, N.C., for broadcast on local television — less than two months after the release of ‘Chronic Town.’

Given that it’s Jim Reid’s birthday today — he’s 50 — we turn this installment of Vintage Video over to The Jesus and Mary Chain, featuring full video of the band’s infamous Sept. 9, 1985, performance at Camden’s Electric Ballroom. The Mary Chain played a 6-song, 20-minute, feedback-drenched set, then left the stage.

For this week’s installment of Vintage Video we spotlight a band we don’t get to write about often enough on this site: The Housemartins, the self-declared ‘fourth best band in Hull.’ You can see the indie-pop band perform a 23-minute set for the ‘Hold Tight!’ program on the U.K.’s Granada Television in June 1986.

Been a while since our last installment of Vintage Video, and even though that post featured the legendary Hüsker Dü, this clips was to good to pass up. The straight-from-VHS video quality’s not the best, but the band’s appearance on a Twin Cities daytime talk show called ‘Good Company’ in April 1986 is priceless.

With Bob Mould’s birthday approaching — he’ll be 51 on Sunday — we thought we’d dedicate this installment of Vintage Video to the legendary Hüsker Dü. And so we present this fantastic footage of the trio powering through an hour-long set at London’s Camden Palace in 1985.
