Martin Hannett help craft the sound of a generation, most notably through his sparse, reverb-heavy production of Joy Division — plus work with other acts from Manchester and beyond, including landmark tracks by OMD, U2 and New Order, as well as the debut single by The Stone Roses.

The lineup for the 2011 installment of the venerable Glastonbury Festival was unveiled today, and, in addition to expected headliner U2, the massive fest also will feature sets by Morrissey, Big Audio Dynamite, Primal Scream, Hothouse Flowers, Robyn Hitchcock, Suzanne Vega, Billy Bragg and Nick Lowe.

At tonight’s U2 concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil, fans were treated to the first performance of “Zooropa” since 1993; it’s only the fourth time the band has ever performed the song live. Watch it right here.

The University of San Francisco’s pioneering college radio station — KUSF, one of the first outlets to play punk rock and whose DJs are credited with helping break bands like Depeche Mode in the U.S. — was pulled off the air abruptly this week.

Haven’t run across this one before: It’s a promo clip of U2 performing along to what sounds like the album version of ‘New Year’s Day’ in a recording studio, circa 1983. Apparently it was included in a French TV documentary on the band.

While U2 hasn’t yet unveiled the tracklist for its next fanclub CD, called ‘U2: Duals,’ the band today offered U2.com members a sneak peak in the form of ‘Amazing Grace/Where the Streets Have No Name,’ a track featuring Bono and Co. and the Soweto Gospel Choir that was created last summer for the World Cup.
