Today marks the 30th anniversary of the genre-shaping debut album from The Smiths, the John Porter-produced self-titled effort that remains, these three decades later, a point of contention among fans: Did these recordings best represent Morrissey and Marr’s early songs?
Just hours after announcing a pair of high-profile arena concerts in New York and Los Angeles, Morrissey this morning has unveiled a full 25-date U.S. tour this May and June that will hit many of the cities and venues that saw cancellations during the former Smiths singer’s disastrous late-2012 and early-2013 American tour.
Morrissey has yet to announce his promised U.S. tour this spring, but tonight he did confirm two major concerts: arena shows in Los Angeles and New York in May and June that will find the former Smiths singer sharing the stage with legendary crooners Tom Jones and Cliff Richard, respectively.
The publication of Morrissey’s autobiography this fall has been a major event in both the musical and literary worlds, and for those who’ve yet to pick up the aptly titled “Autobiography,” now’s your chance: Publisher G.P. Morrissey’s reissue campaign moves forward once again come February with the release of the “definitive master” of his third album, 1992’s Your Arsenal, featuring, as usual these days, a slightly tweaked tracklist, plus an unusually generous bonus: a DVD featuring a previously unreleased 18-song live performance.

One-half of The Smiths reunited on stage in New York on Saturday night for the second time this year, as bassist Andy Rourke showed up toward the end of Johnny Marr’s gig at Webster Hall to once again perform their former band’s classic “How Soon Is Now?” and, this time, “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” as well.
