EMI this week released the first in a new series of Peel Sessions compilations, a 2CD set called ‘Movement: BBC Radio 1 Peel Sessions 1977–1979’ that compiles recordings by 41 different punk, post-punk, reggae and 2 Tone acts including Joy Division, XTC, The Jam, Simple Minds, The Specials, Public Image Ltd. and Siouxsie and the Banshees.
We mark today’s 30th anniversary of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis’ death by posting this clip of what’s arguably his most transcendent moment: ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart,’ appearing here in a version recorded Nov. 26, 1979, for a Peel session — the first time the song ever was recorded.

The late John Peel — the legendary BBC DJ who turned generations of music fans on to new and obscure bands during his nearly 40-year career — will be celebrated this fall with a 4CD, 73-track box set called Kats Karavan: The History of the John Peel Show that features 21 never-before-released recordings.
