Like fellow Brits Squeeze, Pulp and James, ska-pop mainstays Madness will use their trip to California for next month’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival to book some more U.S. shows — the band’s first in this country in five years — including dates in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.
The Cure was announced today as one of the headliners of the U.K.’s massive Reading and Leeds festivals in late August, bringing the band’s total number of European summer festival appearances to 18. The band’s summer touring schedule now opens May 26 at Pinkpop and runs through Sept. 1 at Electric Picnic.
The original five-person lineup of Scottish indie-pop outfit Close Lobsters reunited on Saturday at Madrid Popfest for its first concert since 1989, part of what, so far, is just a three-date reunion, with appearances coming up in Glasgow and Berlin. Unable to leave London until Monday because of ‘work visa issues beyond their control,’ The Jesus and Mary Chain today replaced their appearance at the 35 Denton festival in Texas this weekend with a free show on Wednesday and moving their New Orleans concert to September.
This year’s South By Southwest will feature appearances by a horde of ’80s college rock vets, including The Jesus and Mary Chain, Bob Mould performing ‘Copper Blue,’ The Wedding Present, Thomas Dolby, The Cult, Dinosaur Jr and The dB’s, plus R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Mike Mills playing Big Star’s ‘Third.’
It certainly sounded too good to be true: The La’s were announced as headliners of the inaugural New York Sound City music, media and technology conference this month in what was billed as Lee Mavers and Co.’s first concert in New York City in two decades. But it’s not to be.
It’s been a month since we last checked in with The Cure’s unfolding summer festival plans, and we can now report three more confirmations in Ireland, Russia and Austria, and a schedule that now spreads from late May to early September — with a promise of ‘2 or maybe 3 more to confirm,’ according to the band’s website.
