Ten years ago, the Pixies used Coachella to formally launch their comeback, so it’s fitting the band returned to the festival this weekend as a very late addition, playing a 15-song, 50-minute set that featured old favorites and a handful of tracks that will be included on upcoming album Indie Cindy.

Welcome to the Week in Rock, where we round up all of the headlines posted on this site over the past week. This week featured news about the The The, New Order, Nirvana, The Replacements, Peter Murphy, The Afghan Whigs, The Cult, Butthole Surfers, The Smiths, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills and more.

The Cult took to the stage at the Coachella festival late into the evening on Friday, playing an 11-song, 50-minute set that drew on classics (“Love Removal Machine,” “Rain,” “Wild Flower,” “She Sells Sanctuary”) as well as newer material recorded in the last few years.

With the reunited Afghan Whigs set to release their first new album in 16 years on Tuesday, it’s no surprise they dedicated half of their 10-song, 40-minute set at Coachella on Friday to material from Do To The Beast. Below, you can see a rip of the full webcast of the Whigs’ performance.

There’d been much speculation about who, if anyone, would fill in for the late Kurt Cobain should Nirvana choose to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Last night, the surviving members of the band drafted a quartet of women to do that job.

Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe inducted Nirvana into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night at a massive ceremony at the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn, declaring of the genre-shaping alt rock act that, “This is not just pop music. This is something much greater than that.”

The schedule for the webcast of the first weekend of the Coachella festival — running this Friday through Saturday — features a number of great acts, including Bryan Ferry, Pet Shop Boys, The Afghan Whigs, The Cult, Fishbone, the just-added Pixies and more.

Next week sees the publication of “Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists and Songs that Defined the 1980s,” a tour through 35 classic songs via new interviews with the artists, a list that includes Depeche Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths, Simple Minds and many, many more.

The 1983 debut from The The — Soul Mining, featuring the singles “Uncertain Smile” and “This is the Day” — will receive a 30th anniversary reissue this summer in the former of a deluxe 2LP set that will include the remastered album on one 180-gram vinyl platter and six remixes and B-sides on the other.

In addition to releasing a brand-new studio album this June, Peter Murphy is now taking pre-orders via PledgeMusic for “Mr. Moonlight Tour: 35 Years of Bauhaus,” a DVD release and 10-inch vinyl EP that was filmed/recorded at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles last summer.

This week’s Slicing Up Eyeballs Music Hour featured brand-new music from Peter Murphy, plus old favorites by the likes of Depeche Mode, The Chills, Revenge, Mission of Burma, The Replacements, Simple Minds, The Teardrop Explodes, The Cult, Kate Bush and more.

Last week we shared some fairly rough video of a new New Order song, and now you can get a better look/listen to the track via some pro-shot video taken at Lollapalooza Brazil. And as Bernard Sumner notes, fan reports that the track was called “Drop the Guitar” were not on point.

Third time’s the charm? One-half of The Smiths reunited on stage Sunday for the third time in less than a year, as bassist Andy Rourke joined Johnny Marr toward the end of his Lollapalooza Brazil set to perform their former band’s classic “How Soon Is Now?”
