Better late than never: Plans to turn over Sirius XM’s 1st Wave to Robert Smith and The Cure for a full week in April apparently didn’t quite gel, but the classic-alternative station will host a four-day celebration of the band over Memorial Day weekend.
Running Friday, May 22, through Monday, May 25, the station’s “4 for The Cure Memorial Weekend” will feature a new on-air interview with Smith — who also will play guest DJ — as well as a broadcast of the band’s May 31, 2008, concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
Word first emerged in February that the satellite-radio network was in talks to bring Smith into the studio to play Cure songs for a full week around the time of the band’s headlining set at the Coachella festival.
Ex-KROQ DJ Richard Blade even talked about it on-air on 1st Wave, saying the channel would be “taken over” by the Cure the week of Smith’s birthday, which was April 21.
Plans now call for 1st Wave to broadcast Blade’s in-depth interview with Smith at 11 a.m. ET Sunday, May 24, while the three-hour Hollywood Bowl concert will air at 6 p.m. ET Friday, May 22; noon ET Saturday, May 23; 10 p.m. ET Sunday, May 24; and 4 p.m. ET Monday, May 25.
For subscribers, 1st Wave is Sirius Channel 22 and XM Channel 44; non-subscribers can sign up for a free three-day trial here.
