Depeche Mode opened the short second North American leg of its Global Spirit Tour in Anaheim, Calif., last night, and dropped a big surprise into its setlist, performing the Martin Gore-sung Music For the Masses track “The Things You Said” for the first time in 30 years.
Prior to last night’s concert at the Honda Center in Anaheim, the song hadn’t been performed live since the famed Concert For the Masses, the epic show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., that was filmed and recorded for the Depeche Mode’s 101 concert film and accompanying double-disc soundtrack album.
Depeche Mode’s Global Sprint Tour resumes Thursday night in Sacramento, and continues through June 11 in Toronto before heading back to Europe for additional dates, wrapping July 25 in Berlin.
Below, check out fan-shot video of Gore singing “The Things You Said” last night.

And performed as it should be, not with a guitar?! That’s awesome!
I hope this means that DM will stop making crap music and just go on tour and play the hits that we old school fans want to hear, anything from the 80s and classic from the 90’s
one word: FINALLY…
And so glad Martin didn’t go for just a pianoversion. Sounds great, hope it will stay in the set until the end of the tour.
It was a great show
OMG!!!!!
I was there last night. I was a bit surprised (albeit pleasantly) that they performed it with nearly the same arrangement with which it originally appeared on MFTM.
Thank you for posting this, SUE. Just bought my ticket for tomorrow’s show in Sacramento. Their San Jose show in October was fun, so this will be a treat to see them twice on this tour. Crossing my fingers Martin performs this again.
Would love for them to perform both “Some Great Reward” and “Music For The Masses” in their entirety.
It stayed put in the set for tonight’s show in Sac. The opening notes cued a collective gasp and then roar from the crowd. Sublime.
