Public Image Ltd. this week debuted the third single — the bass-driven “Car Chase” off the band’s upcoming 11th album End of World, which is due out in August. The song is accompanied by a new music video that you can watch below.
The 13-track album is due out Aug. 11 (Pre-order: Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Apple Music), and is bookended by the other two songs the band already has released: album opener “Penge” and closer “Hawaii,” the song John Lydon wrote for his wife Nora Forster as he was losing her to Alzheimer’s disease. She died in April.
Of “Car Chase,” Lydon says:
“Typical PiL, unpredictable to the last. It’s a fantastic smash-and-grab of a song. It’s about someone who cleverly breaks out of the mental institution every night, unbeknownst to his owners. It’s based on having to go to shopping malls at night for cigarettes and wine and seeing the vast carpark space and lighting surrounded by a little village and a lot of dark trees and country lanes. It’s a really creepy scenario, what if somebody creeps out of there, like a mad lunatic?”
PiL also is plotting a 38-date tour of the U.K. and Europe, which opens Sept. 8 with a pair of shows in Greece, followed by a U.K. run through September and then European dates all through October. Full tour date below.
The new PiL album is the band’s third since reuniting in 2009; the group’s lineup since then has included drummer Bruce Smith, guitarist Lu Edmonds and bassist Scott Firth.
