Now in their fifth decade, The Pretenders will release their 14th studio album — a 12-song set called Relentless — later this summer, and Chrissie Hynde and Co. are previewing their new collection of songs with first single “Let the Sun Come In,” which you can hear below.
The album, due out Sept. 1 on Rhino/Parlophone, is available for pre-order now on CD and vinyl, and was produced by David Wrench and recorded at Battery Studios in West London.
Like 2020’s Hate For Sale, the new album is a songwriting collaboration between Hynde and guitarist James Walbourne, who joined the band in 2008.
According to the album’s promotional material, it features what Hynde calls “The Pretenders Collective,” which includes Walbourne, Kris Sonne (drums), Chris Hill (double bass), Dave Page (bass) and Carwyn Ellis (keyboards and guitars). No mention is made of drummer Martin Chambers, a founding member of The Pretenders who served two stints in the band, most recently playing on Hate For Sale.
The new album also features a collaboration with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, who wrote and conducted the string arrangement on album closer “I Think About You Daily.”
