Ex-bandmates Vince Clarke and Martin Gore — who parted ways professionally nearly 30 years ago when Clarke quit Depeche Mode — are working together again on a “techno-ish track” that could be destined for the forthcoming Erasure album, Clarke revealed today via Twitter.
To the shock of fans, Clarke tweeted the news today via his @thecabinstudio account, writing: “Am working on the track ‘Zaat.’ Collaborating with Martin (Gore) (from Basildon).” Clarke previously mentioned that same song in an Aug. 3 tweet about his cat, in which he added, “I’m working on a techno-ish track called Zaat.”
Clarke has been working for months on the next Erasure album at his The Cabin studio in Maine, tracking progress via that Twitter account and a webcam on his official site (the last batch of photos, posted hours ago, show a darkened studio). Periodically, bandmate Andy Bell drops by for sessions or the two gather in London; the duo have been submitting songs to Mute Records honcho Daniel Miller this summer.
There’s been no other mention of a Clarke-Gore collaboration; the two are pictured above in a 2007 photo posted on Erasure’s official site. The duo didn’t write together during their short time together in DM; Clarke wrote the bulk of the band’s 1982 debut, Speak & Spell, while Gore contributed the songs “Tora! Tora! Tora!” and “Big Muff” — and then became chief songwriter after Clarke’s departure.
UPDATE 8/28/10: And now comes word that Gore will join another former Depeche Mode member, Alan Wilder, at a Recoil event this fall. Read more here.
