To commemorate Depeche Mode songwriter Martin L. Gore’s birthday — he turns 49 today — we present this rare solo performance of one of his best-loved songs, “Enjoy the Silence.” The clip above — in which Gore is nearly drown out by the singing of the adoring crowd — was filmed May 7, 2003, at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles, part of a very short solo tour in support of his covers album Counterfeit2 that found the singer performing a handful of Depeche Mode songs, including some, like this one, that Dave Gahan usually sings.
