Bad Lieutenant, Bernard Sumner’s brand-new New Order spinoff, has announced its first-ever live dates this fall in the UK and France, as well as plans to play select U.S. concerts, including opening for the Pixies at one of the band’s New York City shows.
The band — Sumner, late-era New Order guitarist Phil Cunningham and singer-guitarist Jake Evans, plus New Order drummer Stephen Morris — is set to to play three UK concerts in late October and a Paris show in early November. Additionally, Sumner tells Rolling Stone the band will play New York, Chicago and Toronto in November. Those New York shows, according to Rolling Stone, will be opening for the Pixies on that band’s Doolittle 20th anniversary tour at Hammerstein Ballroom Nov. 23-25.
UPDATE 10/7/09: The publicist for the Pixies and Bad Lieutenant tells Slicing Up Eyeballs that while it still hasn’t been officially announced, Bad Lieutenant will only open one of the Pixies’ Hammerstein concerts. She did not say which.
Sumner tells the magazine:
“The bulk of the set will be Bad Lieutenant songs. But there’s also going to be songs from my past, including New Order, Joy Division, Electronic and a song I did with The Chemical Brothers called ‘Out Of Control.’ ”
While the Bad Lieutenant material is fairly guitar-heavy (hear a couple tracks below), the ex-New Order frontman also has revealed recently that he’s working on a synth-based solo album as well, recording with Stuart Price, who has produced Madonna and The Killers.
Sumner recently told Pitchfork:
“When I was making the Bad Lieutenant album I was also making a synthesizer album with Stuart Price — also known as Jacques Lu Cont — who produced the last Killers album, and Madonna’s last-but-one album. But doing both at the same time was a bit much for me. As soon as I’m free, I’m going to finish the album with Stuart.”
Bad Lieutenant’s debut, Never Cry Another Tear, is due out Oct. 6.
