Trent Reznor this week unveiled Nine Inch Nails’ final tour dates, making good on a promise to retire the industrial-rock juggernaut after 20 years — even if it now turns out he was wrong about the band’s Bonnaroo performance being its last U.S. show.
Coming off its joint tour with the reformed Jane’s Addiciton and a spate of European and Asian shows and festival slots, NIN will wrap it up with 10 small-venue concerts in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles (dates below).
Aside from those shows, there will be one more North American performance: an as-yet-unannounced headlining slot at the Virgin Festival Ontario, likely in late August.
Reznor made it known months ago that the much-hyped NIN/JA tour would be his band’s last, although he repeatedly has said he’ll still make music — with or without the Nine Inch Nails label he first adopted in 1988.
During his band’s performance at Bonnaroo in June, Reznor told the audience: “It just dawned on me that this is our last show ever in the United States. Don’t be sad. I’ll keep going. But I think I’m going to lose my … mind if I keep doing this, and I have to stop.”
On NIN’s Web site, Reznor this week posted:
Getting right to the point, we’re going to play a handful of shows in NYC, Chicago and LA starting August 22nd. They will be informal affairs in medium to small venues with longer set-lists, possible special guests, cool openers and other surprises. Upon reflection, the NIN/JA tour felt like we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight — it just didn’t feel right to end NIN that way.
Tickets for the August and September shows go on sale beginning July 17, some exclusively through NIN.com. Go here for full details.
