The Pixies are about to begin the second leg of their massive, three-part North American tour, but they’re already looking ahead to 2024.
This week’s new releases include box sets devoted to Tears For Fears and Waterboys albums, plus a new Morrissey concert film, a reissue of Billy Bragg’s debut, a box set collecting six Boomtown Rats albums, an audiophile CD pressing from the Pixies and live sets from The Mission and The Wedding Present.
The Pixies today followed up last week’s free release of a surprise new track with more revelations, namely that the band is about to embark on a “massive global tour” to debut material off its follow-up to 1991’s Trompe le Monde with The Muffs frontwoman Kim Shattuck replacing the departed Kim Deal.
Seeing as today marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the Pixies’ ‘Come On Pilgrim,’ we’ll use this week’s “120 Minutes” Rewind to spotlight the band with this 10-part, 25-minute playlist that highlights the interview segments and performances from the 1991 episode the band co-hosted with Dave Kendall.
We’ve got a rare double milestone today, as not one but two members of the Pixies — bassist Kim Deal and guitarist Joey Santiago — celebrate their birthdays (she’s 51 and he’s 47). We mark the occasion with this complete 29-song ‘Trompe le Monde’-era set filmed on June 26, 1991, in London.
Joey Santiago tells Slicing Up Eyeballs that the Pixies have discussed making a new record, but that notion remains in the ‘chit-chat phase.’ The guitarist, however, is all for it: ‘I’d like to give it a shot, just to see what we’d come out with. Certainly, we don’t have to put it out if it sucks.’
This week’s link round-up includes a podcast featuring vintage tape of John Peel interviewing the Pixies’ Black Francis, news of The Stone Roses’ upcoming biography, an interview with director Peter Care about the making of R.E.M.’s iconic ‘Drive’ video and a Q&A with Gary Numan about his new album ‘Dead Son Rising.’
