This week’s new releases include an audiophile vinyl reissue of ‘Copper Blue,’ the debut from Bob Mould’s post-Husker Du power trio; The Japanese Popstars’ ‘Controlling Your Allegiance,’ featuring the single ‘Take Forever’ with The Cure’s Robert Smith; and a 2CD reissue of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘Liverpool.’

Back in March, we brought you a teaser of ‘Take Forever’ by The Japanese Popstars featuring Robert Smith of The Cure on lead vocals — and today, with the single finally released in the U.K., the Northern Ireland dance act has made the track available for all to hear.

The Cure has just wrapped up a 44-song, nearly four-hour performance at Australia’s famed Sydney Opera House — a concert that found Robert Smith & Co. running through the band’s first three albums in their entirety and reuniting with former keyboardists Lol Tolhurst and Roger O’Donnell.

Last month, we brought you a free download of a haunting dream-pop cover of The Cure’s ‘Disintegration’ — and now we can offer another contemporary take on a Robert Smith & Co. classic. This time it’s a dark, house-influenced cover of ‘A Forest’ by Denver-based electronic trio Ping Trace.

With The Cure’s first performances in more than two years just weeks away, Robert Smith is now hinting there could be more activity from his no-longer-dormant band than just the upcoming full-album shows in Sydney and an appearance at the U.K.’s Bestival this September.

Twenty-five years ago today, The Cure released ‘Standing on a Beach: The Singles,’ a seminal compilation — and yes, we’re talking about the cassette here, not the ‘Staring at the Sea’ CD — that stands alongside New Order’s ‘Substance’ and ‘Catching Up With Depeche Mode’ as one of the signpost compilations of the ’80s college rock era.

Ousted keyboardist Lol Tolhurst will rejoin The Cure after 22 years to help perform the band’s first three albums — 1979’s ‘Three Imaginary Boys,’ 1980’s ‘Seventeen Seconds’ and 1981’s ‘Faith’ — in their entirety on May 31 and June 1 at the Vivid Live Festival at Australia’s famed Sydney Opera House.
