The Cure’s Robert Smith reveals the band’s plans to tour South America: ‘We’re supposed to go there just after Easter next year. We’re going to play in every… not every country in South America. We’re not playing in Ecuador because people don’t play in Ecuador. But we’re playing Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Venezuela.’

The Cure’s set at Spain’s Bilbao BBK Live got off to a rocky start tonight — but was all the more memorable for it. As the band’s crew worked on keyboard problems, Robert Smith took the stage by himself and treated the crowd to a rare solo-acoustic set , performing “Three Imaginary Boys,” “Fire in Cairo” and “Boys Don’t Cry.”

Another festival, another webcast: The Cure tonight played Rock Werchter 2012 in Belgium, and, as has become customary, part of the band’s set was broadcast live over the web. Above, you can watch the first hour of Robert Smith and Co.’s 24-song set, from opener ‘Open’ through ‘Play for Today’ (via Chain of Flowers).

The Cure’s run of summer festival appearances continues to delight the band’s longtime fans, as Robert Smith and Co. mix up their sets and trot out songs not played in decades, if ever. The latest uber-rarity to creep into The Cure’s set: the title track of 1984’s ‘The Top,’ a song not played live since that year’s tour.

The Cure tonight played the first of at least 19 European festival dates on the books this summer, and Robert Smith had a little secret to reveal at Holland’s famed Pinkpop Festival: new guitarist Reeves Gabrels, a former David Bowie collaborator who previously recorded with Smith in the late ’90s.
