For this week’s installment of “120 Minutes” Rewind, we present this “120 X-Ray” segment from 1989 that focuses on the Red Hot Chili Peppers, pre-megastardom. The band had just released its fourth album and the segment leads into the world premiere of the “Knock Me Down” video.
The original lineup of The Stone Roses will makes its U.S. debut at April’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, joining headliners Blur, Phoenix and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, plus a bill that also includes New Order, OMD, both Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Grinderman, Johnny Marr and more.
For a generation raised by MTV — particularly in the late ’80s and early ’90s — they were ubiquitous: those 30-second “Rock the Vote” promos featuring stars ranging from R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe to Anthony Keidis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Madonna imploring viewers to register to vote and cast their ballots.
This fall, Miles Copeland will bring MTV’s beloved “120 Minutes” precursor “I.R.S. Records Presents The Cutting Edge” to DVD with a new compilation featuring “the absolute highlights and rare moments” from the show, featuring appearances by the likes of R.E.M., Hüsker Dü, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Robyn Hitchcock and more.
This week’s new releases include ‘Out of My Hands,’ the new English-language solo album from a-ha’s Morten Harket, plus a new CD reissue of The Tubes’ ‘Outside Inside, a red-vinyl reissue of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘One Hot Minute,’ and a digital-only U.S. release of the new Erasure ‘Essential’ best-of.
This week’s new releases include new 2CD best-of sets from synthpop masters Heaven 17 and The Specials’ Terry Hall, plus The Wedding Present’s archival 2CD release ‘Live 1990’ and a new 2LP, heavyweight 180-gram audiophile vinyl reissue of the Red Hot Chili Peppers breakthrough smash ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik.’
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this morning announced its Class of 2012, a list that does not include first-time nominees The Cure, but does feature ’80s college-rock vets Red Hot Chili Peppers plus Beastie Boys, Guns N’ Roses, Donovan, Laura Nyro and a combination of The Faces and The Small Faces.
