This is a round-up of the week’s new albums, expanded reissues and/or box sets, appearing each Monday on Slicing Up Eyeballs. All releases due out Friday. Prefab Sprout’s Paddy McAloon is back with a timely new song called “America” that implores the United States to “do what’s right” when it comes to immigrants: “Don’t reject that stranger knocking at your door,” McAloon sings, “The orphan child exiled by war. She may become a doctor and work among the poor.”

This week’s new releases include the brand-new studio album from the Pixies (‘Indie Cindy’), plus a four-disc box set from The Sound, a reissue of X’s ‘Under the Big Black Sun,’ the documentary “The Rise and Fall of The Clash,” the U.S. release of Prefab Sprout’s latest album and an Inspiral Carpets reissue.

This week’s new releases include brand new studio albums from Prefab Sprout, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo with his new band The Dust, and Steve Nieve of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, plus reissues and best-of sets from The Stranglers, Madness, Pop Will Eat Itself and Propaganda.

The reclusive and now very much bearded Paddy McAloon returns next month with a brand-new Prefab Sprout album entitled Crimson/Red, and BBC 6 Music listeners recently got to hear the first single, “The Best Jewel Thief in the World,” when it was premiered on the “Radcliffe and Maconie” show.

Fans of reclusive songwriting genius Paddy McAloon spent a good part of last month debating the authenticity of a 10-song album called The Devil Came A Calling that mysteriously appeared online June 10, but now the verdict’s in: It is, indeed, a new Prefab Sprout album and it’s due out this fall.

Prefab Sprout’s Paddy McAloon recently agreed to answer some questions from Slicing Up Eyeballs via e-mail. He discussed finishing ‘Let’s Change the World With Music,’ offered his thoughts on songwriting and whether he cares about pleasing his audience, and speculated as to whether the world can, in fact, be changed with music.
