For this week’s installment of “120 Minutes” Rewind, we present offer this “120 X-Ray” segment on Washington, D.C., hardcore pioneers Bad Brains that aired in 1990, a few months after the release of the band’s fourth album, Quickness. Host Dave Kendall chats up guitarist Doctor Know and bassist Darryl Jenifer.

For the first post-hiatus installment of “120 Minutes” Rewind, we roll the clocks back to an interview segment culled from an early episode, aired in 1987, that finds host Kevin Seal chatting with Justin Sullivan, the frontman of U.K. rockers New Model Army, who’s ID’d in the episode by his early-career stage name, Slade the Leveller.

We’ve posted a number of memorable clips over the years as part of our “120 Minutes” Rewind feature, but this is a true rarity: some 35 minutes of J.J. Jackson-hosted footage from the earliest-known recording of an episode of MTV’s seminal Sunday night music-video show that took viewers “two hours into the future” every week.

R.E.M. will release a limited-edition 4LP set on Record Store Day that collects the audio from the band’s two appearances, in 1991 and 2001, on MTV’s “Unplugged” series, featuring all 33 songs the band performed at the two tapings, including 11 that never aired on either broadcast.

As frequent visitors to this site know, we like to revisit that classic staple of Sunday night TV, MTV’s “120 Minutes,” each Friday with our weekly 120 Minutes Rewind series. So it’s great to see our friend and fellow aficionado Chris Cummins going a step further, and hosting a live “120 Memories” event in Philadelphia.
