Luna — Dean Wareham’s reunited post-Galaxie 500 dreampop act — today debuted a Rose McGowan-starring video for its new cover of The Cure’s “Fire in Cairo,” which will appear on its new covers album A Sentimental Education, due out next month. Watch it here.

In a bit of holiday synchronicity, former Galaxie 500 frontman Dean Wareham today shared video of himself and some fellow musicians performing his old band’s melancholy 1990 song “Fourth of July” on the Fourth of July itself (“4th of July on 4th of July,” he wrote). Dean Wareham will step out of his ongoing Luna reunion next month to celebrate his earlier band with a one-off performance of Galaxie 500’s 1988 debut album Today in San Francisco — a concert Wareham is calling a “one time only” event. Tickets are on sale now for the July concert.

Luna — Dean Wareham’s reunited post-Galaxie 500 dreampop act — will put out its first new music since 2004 in September with the simultaneous release of a 10-song covers album called A Sentimental Education and a 6-song instrumental EP titled A Place of Greater Safety.

For our first post-hiatus installment of Vintage Video, we spotlight a band that, at least in its live incarnation, is sadly underrepresented on YouTube: dream-pop icons Galaxie 500. So here’s a 7-song, 40-minute set that finds Dean Wareham, Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang performing material from 1988’s Today and 1989’s On Fire.

Last fall, Dean Wareham announced plans to reunite his post-Galaxie 500 band Luna for the first time in a decade for shows this coming spring in Spain. Today, though, he followed that up with big news for U.S. fans: The band’s reunion will open with an April 13 show in Los Angeles, with more American dates this fall.

This week’s new releases include the first-ever solo album from Galaxie 500 and Luna frontman Dean Wareham, plus a live DVD from John Foxx filmed in 1983 and a new anthology from The Jasmine Minks that contains all four of the band’s albums plus a new song.
