Midnight Oil’s Peter Garrett resigns Australian ministry post, won’t seek re-election

Following a Labor Party shakeup today that ousted Australia’s first female prime minister, former Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett has announced he is leaving government, as he resigns his position as Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth and won’t seek re-election.

Alan Myers, the third and most well-known of Devo’s drummers, who played on the classic albums Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, Duty Now for the Future, Freedom of Choice and beyond, died this week, according to Ralph Carney, a jazz musician and friend of Myers’, and current Devo drummer Josh Freese.

Mute Records is embarking on a new series of Cabaret Voltaire releases that will begin this summer with a vinyl reissue of the group’s 1981 album Red Mecca, to be followed this fall by a new box set collecting four early- to mid-’80s albums “alongside bonus CDs and DVDs” and, in early 2014, a new compilation.
