Move over, vinyl: Taking their cue from the wildly successful Record Store Day, some lovers of the lowly but resurgent cassette tape format have launched International Cassette Store Day, which will take place Sept. 7 and feature limited-edition cassette releases from The Flaming Lips, The Birthday Party and more.
This month’s Auto Reverse mixtape features new music from both the Pixies and ex-Pixie Kim Deal, plus some vintage tunes by The Replacements, X, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, New Order, The Mission, Robyn Hitchcock, The Cure, King Missile, The Godfathers, Ramones and The Bubblemen.
The Mission this September will release its new studio album The Brightest Light, an 11-song collection that marks the first time original band members Wayne Hussey, Simon Hinkler and Craig Adams have recorded together since the sessions for 1990’s Carved in Sand.
This week’s new releases include the Pet Shop Boys’ second new album in a year (‘Electric’), plus an expanded reissue of The Cult’s ‘Electric,’ a repress of Peter Buck’s 2012 vinyl-only solo debut and a new monkey-themed 7-inch, a collection of Style Council albums and a reissue of Frank Black’s ‘Oddballs.’
Tonight’s edition of “Dark Wave” on Sirius XM’s 1st Wave featured music from Alien Sex Fiend, Revolting Cocks, Tubeway Army, David J, Virgin Prunes, Gang of Four, The Mission, Xmal Deutchland, The Smiths, The Cramps, Public Image Ltd., Killing Joke, Single Gun Theory and much, much more.
