On this holiest of holy days — Record Store Day, of course — Johnny Marr took to Facebook to lament the ongoing loss of record stores, calling them “a very important kind of shop,” and blaming greedy landlords for pricing music more and more retailers “out of their premises and livelihoods, and our culture.”
The Pixies’ forthcoming album Indie Cindy collects the 12 new songs the band released over the past year via a series of three EPs, but fans who buy the pre-release vinyl edition of the album today at participating Record Store Day retailers are in for a surprise: a 13th new song, “Women of War.”
The 2014 installment of Record Store Day finally is upon us, and one of the scores of acts participating in this year’s extravaganza is the recently reunited Mazzy Star, who today release a limited-edition “Coke-bottle” clear vinyl 7-inch featuring two previously unreleased tracks: “I’m Less Here” and “Things.”
Coachella’s second weekend is under way now, and The Replacements took the stage tonight for the second of the reunited band’s appearances at the two-weekend fest — and dropped a big surprise on the crowd, as Green Day’ Billie Joe Armstrong joined the ‘Mats for part of the band’s set.
