Like OutKast, reunited college-rock legends The Replacements seem content to stick strictly to festivals, the latest of which is the just-announced two-weekend Austin City Limits Music Festival in October, where the ‘Mats will join headliners Eminem, Pearl Jam, Skrillex, Beck and, of course, OutKast on the massive bill.
Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry will follow up his short West Cost tour and Coachella appearances this month with a new string of North American dates this fall that center on the eastern portion of the continent, hitting Chicago, Milwaukee, Toronto, Montreal, Washington, D.C., New York, Boston and Philadelphia.
A new 50-song compilation of early R.E.M. material called Complete Rarities: I.R.S. 1982-1987 is due out digitally next month, but appears to be largely, if not completely, comprised of tracks previously assembled on 1987’s out-of-print Dead Letter Office, a more recent I.R.S. years best-of and singles.
On Friday, Pixies frontman Black Francis will help launch the new novel he’s co-authored — “The Good Inn,” which is billed as “blurring the lines between fact and fiction, film and prose, reality and surreality” — at an event in Brooklyn. Keith Levene, founding member of both The Clash and Public Image Ltd., plans to resurrect what was to be PiL’s fourth album —1984’s Commercial Zone, released in two different incarnations — and “enhance it with original material,” finishing the album 30 years later.
Due out next week, the Pixies’ first new album in 23 years isn’t exactly new, given that its 12 tracks each have been released via a series of three EPs over the past seven months. Nevertheless, the band today premiered Indie Cindy via streams at NPR and the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper.
