Exactly 28 years ago today, The Smiths took the stage for only their third concert — and only their second with the final Morrissey/Johnny Marr/Andy Rourke/Mike Joyce lineup — opening for Factory Records funk band 52nd Street at New Order’s infamous Manchester club The Hacienda.

Peter Buck is no stranger to jumping on stage for a good jam, so when former Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould swung through Athens, Ga., on July 25, 1990, in support of ‘Black Sheets of Rain,’ the R.E.M. guitarist pitched in on a crunchy cover of Neil Young’s classic-rock staple ‘Cinnamon Girl.’

For the past day or so, Echo & The Bunnymen’s web folk have been uploading a stream of videos to the band’s YouTube channel, including this 1985 TV appearance that finds the band joined by Billy Bragg to play The Velvet Underground’s ‘Run Run Run.’

Haven’t run across this one before: It’s a promo clip of U2 performing along to what sounds like the album version of ‘New Year’s Day’ in a recording studio, circa 1983. Apparently it was included in a French TV documentary on the band.

Thirty-three years ago tonight, Elvis Costello & The Attractions staged one of the more infamous stunts in ‘Saturday Night Live’ history, pulling the plug on their label-approved song ‘Less Than Zero’ less than 10 seconds in and instead ripping through ‘Radio Radio.’

Since it’s Election Day here in the U.S., check out this 30-second PSA that Sonic Youth did for Rock the Vote during the 1992 presidential election. As Thurston Moore says, ‘Don’t keep freedom for granted. Vote to keep it strong.’

Back in August, we posted four high-quality video clips that had just surfaced from the 1995 co-headlining tour by David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails — and today we’ve learned that the filmmaker who put those fantastic clips together has uploaded a 40-minute rough cut of additional footage.
