Well, here we are: the end of Best of the ’80s album polls. Time for the big one. The grandaddy of them all. Yes, today we ask Slicing Up Eyeballs’ readers — after having ranked the best records of each year of the 1980s — to wrap up this year by crowning the absolute best albums of the entire 1980s.
Indie-rock legends Dinosaur Jr help cap off a year of busy touring with a big show in Brooklyn, New York, in support of MGMT — and we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky Slicing Up Eyeballs reader who can get him or herself to the Barclays Center on Dec. 13.
This week’s new releases include the first new album from Black Flag since 1985, plus a Nick Cave live album, reissues from David J, Lemonheads, Ghost Dance and They Might Be Giants, a posthumous collection from Rozz Williams, a new Lou Reed compilation and a long-awaited US Festival DVD.
Tonight’s edition of “Dark Wave” on Sirius XM’s 1st Wave featured music from Magazine, Killing Joke, Sad Lovers and Giants, The Mission, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, A Certain Ratio, Bauhaus, Wire, Front 242, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Damned, Death Cult and more.
Just days after completing their first tour without original bassist Kim Deal, the resurgent Pixies apparently have decided to part ways with her touring replacement, Kim Shattuck of The Muffs, who took to both Facebook and Twitter tonight to announce she was “super disappointed to learn that my time with the Pixies ended today.”
It’s the Black Friday installment of Record Store Day today, and one of the most sought-after titles no doubt will be the full-album cover of The Stone Roses’ 1989 debut LP by The Flaming Lips and their friends — a release on multi-color vinyl that’s limited to just 500 copies and isn’t an official Record Store Day release.
