Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe has released a handful of new songs over the last few years, and he adds to that small but growing collection of solo material with “Give Me a Hand” — a track also featuring vocals from Gaelynn Lea released this week as part of an Earth Day benefit album.
The song — which you can buy on Bandcamp — is only available through May 6 as part of the EarthPercent x Earth Day 2023 campaign; funds raised by the sale of the song or the full album go toward EarthPercent’s grant-making program to “support organizations doing vital work to tackle the climate emergency.”
“Give Me a Hand,” like Stipe’s other recent solo tracks, finds the former R.E.M. frontman continuing to dabble in electronic sounds. The song was co-written by Stipe, Fischerspooner’s Warren Fischer and Andy LeMaster of Now It’s Overhead. Fischer and LeMaster play synthesizers on the song, with LeMaster providing backing vocals to Stipe and Lea, a folk singer and disability advocate.
