Depeche Mode today debuted “Ghosts Again,” the first single off Memento Mori, the synthpop legends’ first new album in six years and the group’s first as a duo following the sudden and shocking death of co-founder Andy Fletcher last May of an aortic dissection.

The 12-song album is due out March 24 on Columbia Records — see full tracklist below — and can be preordered now on CD and deluxe clear double-vinyl via Amazon.com.

After teasing it for a couple of weeks, the group premiered the song via its Anton Corbijn-directed music video:

Memento Mori will be Depeche Mode’s 15th studio album, its first since 2017’s Spirit, which featured the singles “Where’s the Revolution,” “Going Backwards” and “Cover Me.”

In announcing the album, Martin Gore said:

“We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time. After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.”

Dave Gahan added:

“Fletch would have loved this album. We’re really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we can’t wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.”

Depeche Mode will embark on a world tour this spring, beginning with a what’s being billed as a “limited series of North American arena dates” that open March 23 in Sacramento, California, and continues onto Europe for concerts in May through August. The band this week said on social media that, “Additional North American shows will be announced shortly.”

  1. THIS IS GOD AWFUL!!! RIDICULOUS TO CONTINUE. GIVE IT UP!!! PLEASE!!! HAVEN’T HAD A DECENT ALBUM SINCE “VIOLATOR”.

  2. The familiar iconography of mortal man playing chess with hooded death, as portrayed in Ingmar Bergman’s classic film, “The Seventh Seal,” did not go unnoticed.

  3. Best new DM song in years. I hope the rest of the album is as good.

  4. You can’t judge the album from the lead single when it comes to DM, but I am hoping the energy of this song continues with the rest of their new music.
