The Dead Milkmen to release cover of ‘(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang’

The Dead Milkmen this month will release their first new music in three years, a cover of Heaven 17’s classic banned-by-the-BBC debut single “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang,” which will be issued as a transparent-red 7-inch vinyl single and digitally.

The single, due out Aug. 21, will feature the Milkmen’s cover of the 1981 synthpop staple as well as B-side “A Complicated Faith,” an original song described by the band as being “buoyed by Depeche Mode-inspired rhythms and a scalding guitar solo courtesy of Joe Jack Talcum.”

Label profits from the single — the Milkmen’s first release since 2017’s Welcome to the End of the World EP — will be donated to the Girls Rock Philly charity. Pre-order the single via The Giving Groove.

In February, the band announced it was beginning work on a new album, which would be its first full-length since 2014’s Pretty Music For Pretty People and the group’s third LP since reuniting in 2008. It’s not clear what the status of that project is, or how the ensuing global pandemic has impacted it.

The Dead Milkmen have been playing “Fascist Groove Thang” live for a few years — see one of those performances, and hear the original, below.
