Omnivore Recordings this spring will finish its Game Theory reissue campaign by releasing a new collection of almost entirely unreleased material recorded by the jangle-pop outfit’s final lineup in 1989 and 1990, when late frontman Scott Miller brought on board Michael Quercio of the recently broken-up Paisley Underground act The Three O’Clock.
The new collection, Across the Barrier of Sound: PostScript, is due out March 20 and will include 24 tracks — a mix of home demos, recordings and live cuts — in its CD and digital editions and 14 on vinyl.
That final Game Theory lineup, which played live for a couple years but never recorded a studio album, featured Miller — who died in 2013 — as well as Quercio, longtime Game Theory drummer Gil Ray on guitar and keyboards, and Jozef Becker, who had been in the band Alternate Learning with Miller, on drums. Miller and Becker would go on to re-recorded some of the material on this compilation in their post-Game Theory band The Loud Family.
The Across the Barrier of Sound packaging will include new liner notes by music writer Annie Zaleski and remembrances of the band by members of Wilco and Guided By Voices.
