Still waiting in Turkey for his U.S. visa to be approved, Peter Murphy has now rescheduled four more concerts of his planned 15-night residency in San Francisco, doubling up shows on three nights of the run to cram 12 concerts into 15 nights at The Chapel venue.
The run of shows, at which Murphy is playing his solo albums in full, should have started last week, but now — after rescheduling this weekend’s concerts — is slated to open next Tuesday.
A note posted to Murphy’s Facebook page this morning says:
“Peter would like to express his gratitude to his amazing fans for their continuing support and understanding. He is excited to play these incredible shows for you and cannot wait to get here. Everyone involved continues to do everything they can, with a keen understanding of the great difficulty this has caused for many.”
Murphy’s plans for a San Francisco residency have been trouble-plagued from the start. The concerts originally were announced to take place last June and July, but were rescheduled to 2018 after issues arose with the singer’s vocal chords that forced him call off the run.
The concerts will find Murphy performing “a retrospective of his greatest solo albums in their entirety,” as well as three once-concluding nights — now in the middle of the rejiggered run — devoted to Bauhaus material, at which Murphy will be joined by has former bandmate David J to play bass in his band.
The rescheduled run was supposed to have started last week, but The Chapel first said it was preemptively re-rescheduling the Jan. 23 and 24 opening of the residency, and combining them as a single show on Feb. 1, due to “unforeseen governmental delay in the processing of Peter’s visa application including the shutdown of the federal government.”
Last Friday’s concert was canceled as Murphy remained in Istanbul. Then the weekend shows, too, were bumped, with the blame now assigned to a diplomatic spat. And then more were rescheduled this week.
