After weeks of speculation about the band’s plans for 2018, The Cure today announced a giant 40th anniversary concert next summer in London’s Hyde Park with support from Interpol, Goldfrapp, Editors, Ride, Slowdive, The Twilight Sad and more to be announced.
The concert, on July 7, is being billed as The Cure’s “only European show of 2018,” and will find Robert Smith and Co. playing a 2-hour headlining set. Tickets — £63-£200, or about $84-$267 — are already available via pre-sale (password is IMAGINARY), with the general on-sale set for 9 a.m. Friday.
It’s not yet clear whether The Cure has additional plans for 2018 — though the billing of the London concert as its only European show suggests something could be afoot in the U.S. as well. Whether that might mean another festival-style event put on by the band itself, or a headlining slot at a major American festival like Coachella or Bonnaroo, or even a U.S. tour, is anybody’s guess.
It’s also not clear whether this is what longtime Cure video director Tim Pope was alluding to recently, or if he’s working on some kind of separate film project. He tweeted today that he’ll “say more, too, shortly.”
Stay tuned for further information.
