The original lineup of Microdisney will reunite next June after 30 years apart for a one-off performance of their 1985 album The Clock Comes Down the Stairs, considered to be among the greatest Irish albums ever made, at Dublin’s National Concert Hall.
The concert — featuring Cathal Coughlan, Sean O’Hagan, Jon Fell and Tom Fenner — is set for June 2, and is being billed as “a one-off exclusive” performance of the 12-song album “and more.”
The reunion coincides with a new hour-long radio documentary about the Irish rock act called “Iron Fist in Velvet Glove: The Story of Microdisney.” Produced by Paul McDermott, the program features new interviews with Coughlan and O’Hagan, as well as Robert Forster of The Go-Between, Rough Trade’s Geoff Travis and more. Coughlan and O’Hagan formed Microdisney in Cork, Ireland, in 1980, and later enlisted Fell and Fenner as their rhythm section. The Clock Comes Down the Stairs, released by Rough Trade in 1985, reached No. 1 on the U.K. indie chart. After two more albums on Virgin, the group disbanded in 1988. Coughlan would go on to form The Fatima Mansions, while O’Hagan started The High Llamas.
Cherry Red Records reissued an expanded version of The Clock Came Down the Stairs in 2013.
