John Lydon joins North American arena tour of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

John Lydon

John Lydon will tour North American arenas this summer, but not with Public Image Ltd. or the Sex Pistols — no, the erstwhile Johnny Rotten will play King Herod in a new touring production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice classic “Jesus Christ Superstar” that also will feature members of Incubus, *NSYNC and Destiny’s Child.

The production, announced Friday, will hit 54 cities between June 9 and Aug. 17 (see full dates), and will find Lydon joined by Incubus’ Brandon Boyd (Judas Iscariot), *NSYNC’s JC Chasez (Pontius Pilate) and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child (Mary Magdalene). British actor and singer Ben Forster will play Jesus.

Lydon, in a news release, says of the role:

“I’m here to sing with the King of the Jews, who could ask for anything more?”

“Well, I am the Christ. Bless you my son.”
    “Oh bugger off, Jesus.”

And there’s an Indianapolis date! Brilliant!

  4. In some strange, twisted way this makes perfect sense. Herod’s performance is right up his alley.
