Now that the dust has settled from the controversial Best Albums of the ’80s poll, it’s time, as long promised, to get back to the voting. And next up will be a poll to determine the best EPs and mini-albums of the ’80s — basically, that somewhat ambiguous class of release that’s too long to be a single yet not quite long enough to be a full LP.
We’re going to do it a bit differently this time, though.
Coming up with the year-by-year best-album ballots, while time-consuming, was not terribly difficult, since there are many places across the vast reaches of the Internet that list the records that came out in a given year. Yet it’s much harder to find such lists of EPs or their even more nebulous cousin, the mini-album.
So with that in mind, we’re turning to you, the readers of Slicing Up Eyeballs, to make sure we catch every crucial release for the ballot in this next poll, which likely will launch next week.
In the comments below, or on our Facebook page, please let us know which EPs or mini-albums — released between 1980 and 1989 — you believe should be included. You can also email your list to info@slicingupeyeballs.com.
Thanks, in advance, for your help.
And, after we vote on EPs, we’ll move on to best compilations of the ’80s and then, if all goes well, year-by-year polls to determine the best individual songs of the ’80s.

* U2 – Under a blood red sky
* U2 – Wide awake in Americs
* Simple Minds – Ballad of The Streets EP
* Martin Gore – Counterfeit
* Erasure – Crackers International
Ministry twelve inch singles
Do you disqualify compilation EPs, if that’s how the tracks were released in certain markets? New Order’s Factus 1981-1982 EP comes to mind.
I’d be interested in that as well, in this case I love that new order EP, though a lot of that comes from the artwork since it’s really a small compilation of tracks.
I second Martin Gore’s Counterfeit
Also, Recoil’s Hydrology and 1+2
And Chronic Town is a must.
Skinny Puppy’s Remission
Tommy Keene’s PLACES THAT ARE GONE ep
R.E.M.’s CHRONIC TOWN ep

the B-52’s ‘Mesopotamia’
Many great Cocteau Twins EPs.
Absolutely! I love all the Cocteau Twins EPs. It was such a great format for them. It let the songs stand apart from each other more than on a full album.
The Wedding Present – Radio One Sessions – The Evening Show

Howard Jones – The 12″ Album
R.E.M. – Chronic Town

Missing Persons EP (1980)
This is tricky because the term “EP” is used very inconsistently. For example, U2’s Wide Awake in America, with four tracks, is an EP.
But U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name,” also with four tracks, is a 12″ single.
Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time” CD single is often listed as an EP.
But Peter Gabriel’s “Red Rain” is always a 12″ or CD single.
Lush – Scar (MiniAlbum, 1989)
How did i forget this one? Very beautiful and so underrated release. Great opener for the Lush discography!!!!
The Thorn Siouxsie and the Banshees
Wild Things EP by The Creatures
Love’s Easy Tears – Cocteau Twins
Echoes In A Shallow Bay – Cocteau Twins
4AD EP – Bauhaus
A Single – The Cure (Actually a 2×7″ with 4 songs)
The “A Single” was “The Hanging Garden” 2×7 by the way.
Guessing Peel Sessions don’t count?
The Alarm EP
Pretenders – Extended Play
Pale Saints – Barging Into The Presence Of God (EP, 1989). 3 tracks, but officially considered an EP, since it crossed the 10-min mark, which is what makes an EP and EP, I think.
Sing Songs by The Church
The Alarm – EP (83)
Mighty Lemon Drops – Out of Hand (87)
Pailead – Trait (88)
Make that “Pailhead”
pailhead was an absolute harbinger
Operation Ivy – Hectic (88)

Skinny Puppy’s Remission
Pixies’ Come On Pilgrim

re: Yet it’s much harder to find such lists of EPs or their even more nebulous cousin, the mini-album.
rateyourmusic.com have top ep charts for every year of the 80s: see eps section
https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/
and a overall top 80s ep chart
https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/ep/1980s
listing 1000 eps
Yeah, I saw that — but it’s just one source. With the album lists, I was able to crosscheck with 3-4 difference sources for each year. And even then, there would be titles inevitably missing
What the hell is the difference between a “mini-album” and an EP? I belive my copy of “Under a Blood Red Sky” vinyl had a ‘mini-album’ sticker.
Also, as above, what about 12″ singles with 3 or more non-album tracks?

I am surprised these have not been nominated:
Pet Shop Boys – Disco
Meat Beat Manifesto – God O.D.
– EXTENDED PLAY (1981), The Pretenders: 1st EP I ever purchased at age 9…and I’ve loved EPs (and Chrissie Hynde) ever since.
-WILD THINGS (1981), The Creatures: A great beginning for Siouxsie and Budgie…also, the beginning of their 25 year romance and Siouxsie and the Banshee beat collaboration)
-MESOPOTAMIA (1982), B52s: “Mesopotamia…That’s where I wanna goooooo!”
-THE THORN (1984), Siouxsie & The Banshees: one of the best EPs in Rock/Pop/Punk, one of the best things the group ever did (“Overground” and “Placebo Effect” are classics), and one of the most poetic, creepiest ending track in music history. I’m still hoping that Siouxsie’s third studio LP will be a full-length version of this style of music, w/ acoustic, classical orchestration.
I think it was one of the best selling vinyl EPs of all time!

So… what’s the plan on live albums? will they get their own poll, be included in this, or not be included at all?
Back in the 1986 poll, Joe Jackson’s “Big World” album was disqualified because that album was uniquely recorded, in front of an audience ordered to stay quiet during the songs. That in SUE’s opinion, constituted a “live” album. What will happen to that album? Also…how can one the decade’s great albums period, Talking Head’s “Stop Making Sense”, be ignored on a technicality? Does SUE consider that album a soundtrack? a live album? it might get confusing.
Perhaps a clearer definition would help here. I’m seeing a few 12″ singles included alongside EPs that feature all original content. I would hope that a definition of EP for the sake of this poll is to include content created *specifically* for that release, not content from previous albums.
Remixes, in my mind, would be included in the compilations category, as would movie/tv soundtracks.
Not complaining here, but trying to see if there is some clarity. Besides, the complaining will start for many people when The Cure wins this poll as well.
I’m not sure if any of these discs meet the definition for mini-albums, but I guess this is kindof what you are looking for:
Clash — Black Market Clash
The Jesus and Mary Chain — Barbed Wire Kisses
The Stone Roses — Turns into stone
Replacements — The Shit Hits the Fans
The Bongos – Numbers with Wings
The Jam – Beat Surrender
Minutemen – Project Mersh
Pixies – Come on Pilgrim
Pretenders – Extended Play
R.E.M. – Chronic Town
I am pretty sure that an EP can be no more than four songs, otherwise it is a mini-album. So:
The Chameleons: Tony Fletcher
The Sisters of Mercy: The Reptile House
The Sisters of Mercy: Body and Soul
Opal: Fell from the Sun
The Pogues: Poguetry in Motion
Siouxsie: The Thorn
Dead Can Dance: Garden of Archane Delights
The Replacements – Stink
The Alarm – ST ep
The Alarm – Spirit of ’76
The Alarm – Electric Folklore Live
Big Country – Wonderland
The Jam – Beat Surrender
NIN – Sin
The Plimsouls – Zero Hour
Midnight Oil – Bird Noises
Midnight Oil – Species Deceases
I forgot to include Howard Jones – Action Replay
Husker Du-Metal Circus
I doubt this counts for this poll, but I thought I would mention it anyway:

Have not seen these two posted on here yet. Two of my favorite EPs from the ’80s:

Duran Duran – Carnival
Duran Duran – Nite Romantics
Duran Duran – Tiger Tiger
Erasure – Crackers International
U2 – Wide Awake in America
REM – Chronic Town
Do “bootlegs” count? I would definitely vote for Replacements Shit Hits The Fans but it wasn’t a proper release. For legitimacy’s sake, you gotta have B-52’s Mesopotamia, Duran Duran Carnival and Cocteau Twins and something from SST. (How the heck was there no SST stuff in the Top 10 on any of the priors?)
I wouldn’t think bootlegs will be part of this, as they are not proper releases by the band and/or their record label.

Thanks for all the input so far. This really helps. And to answer a question some have had, since this will be the only poll covering EPs, I’m inclined to include live EPs and EPs that compile previously unreleased material.
I will note, though, that some of the things being listed here are just routine 12-inch singles, and those aren’t really the same thing, and wouldn’t be included.
I am hoping to do polls for individual songs of each of the ’80s, too.
It’s a tough line to draw – for example, someone nominated Birthday Party’s ‘The Bad Seed’ (which I’d forgotten about), 4 songs not found on other releases at that time. That one is obvious. But someone else nominated the Echo & Bunnymen 5 song mini-lp that mixed new with old material – not so clear. And then some 12″ discs are too groundbreaking to ignore (Human League’s 12″ Love Action/Hard times, New Order Blue Monday 12″).
SUE, so full length live albums will not be included in any poll? Sad to think that would happen…
I’m guessing that soundtracks will be covered in the “compilations” poll. Is that correct?
Specimen – Batastrophe
New Model Army – White Coats
Eurythmics – Touch Dance
Skinny Puppy – Remission and Chainsaw
Front 242 – Never Stop and Politics of Pressure

The Replacements’ “The Shit Hits the Fans” was officially released on cassette by Twin Tone, despite being sourced from an unofficial recording. I’ve seen a photo of the cassette recently. Its quality as a live record is debatable, but there is no question that it deserves to be on your live record poll.
Here are a couple of other (debatable) selections for your consideration:
The Jam’s “Live” EP, which I think was included in initial copies of “Snap!”
http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=4039794
