Update: Morrissey now says ‘Autobiography’ will be published in Europe, but not U.S.

Morrissey, 'Autobiography'

Morrissey’s long-in-the-works autobiography — titled, appropriately, “Autobiography” — was set to be published next week, but the singer claims  a last-minute and heretofore unexplained “content disagreement” with Penguin Classics “has caused the venture to collapse,” leaving the former Smiths frontman in search of a new publisher.

Morrissey revealed the news, and the scuttled book’s planned cover, via a statement to quasi-official fansite True To You. No further details of the memoir, the publication of which had not actually been officially announced, were offered.

Morrissey’s full statement:

Although Morrissey’s Autobiography was set to be available throughout the UK on September 16th, a last-minute content disagreement between Penguin Books and Morrissey has caused the venture to collapse. No review copies were printed, and Morrissey is now in search of a new publisher.

Of course, we know of one publisher that very much would like to secure Moz’s business.

UPDATE: A day later, True To You posted another statement from Morrissey’s camp, this time saying the book’s publication is, in fact, on in the U.K. and Europe for sometime in “the next few weeks,” but that Moz has no American publisher. This comes as the book still has never been announced by Penguin.

The new statement:

The publication of Morrissey’s Autobiography remains with Penguin Books. Yhis is a deal for the UK and Europe, but Morrissey has no contract with a publisher for the U.S. or any other territory. As of 13 September, Morrissey and Penguin (UK) remain determined to publish within the next few weeks.

  1. Steve couldn’t dial 911 without a controversy. Long winded overly dramatic explanation dripping with hyperbole in 3…2…1…

Save me from the ills and the ails and from other things….

  2. Being difficult to work with and a project therefore coming to an unceremonious halt?? Well, that certainly doesn’t sound like the Morrissey *I* know!

I half expected the report of the book’s cancellation to be attributed to any number of imagined/convenient ailments, or his dying mother, or those “Duck Dynasty” buffoons, or perhaps the machinations of a mustache twirling record company villain, or maybe someone within a 20-mile radius of this whining cliché who had a fragment of beef jerky in their pocket.

  3. The guy’s a shit head. Next!

  4. I know a lot of peeps like this guy, but he needs to go away…

  5. Sam: don’t hate on the duck dynesty guys.

As for Moz, I think he should pull a JD Salienger and disappear in New Hampshire or something. That would be class.

  6. Ken . . . so, you call me out for “hating” the Duck Dynasty guys but not for shitting on Morrissey’s dying mom excuses?

Priorities are a thing you might want to check into.

  7. “Haters gonna hate” : Oscar Wilde.

  8. Did another tummy-ache trigger this cancellation? If he scheduled the dawn, one would expect never to see another sunrise.

  9. He should call the book “Penne For My Thoughts”

  10. If he doesn’t expose how and why his recent remasters became such a horrible, revisionist nightmare then frankly, Mr. Shankly, I don’t care.

  11. No, the book title should me titled “Maybe one day we can share a cheese enchilada”

  12. Gaggin' Em Gabe

    Great mock-up cover.

  13. William Nothing

This will be bigger and better the The Bible, and a million times less boring
