The Breeders brought their Last Splash 20th anniversary tour to Boston for a homecoming gig Thursday night, but ended up celebrating an earlier era as co-founder Tanya Donelly re-joined Kim Deal and Co. onstage for a pair of numbers, including a giddy, laugh-filled cover of The Beatles’ “Happiness is a Warm Gun” that broke down entirely in the middle, devolving into what bassist Josephine Wiggs dubbed “jazz confusion.”
According to fan accounts, Donelly, formerly of Throwing Muses, joined The Breeders first to sing backing vocals on 1992’s “Do You Love Me Now,” then returned during the encore for the Beatles’ cover, which the band recorded for its 1990 debut Pod. Donelly played on that album and the Safari EP before leaving The Breeders. Violinist Carrie Bradley, another early member, also appeared at Thursday night’s show.
Below, you can see video of both songs, including two takes of “Happiness is a Warm Gun” — one’s better quality than the other, but the latter features the full intro. Also, check out photos of the show at Boston’s Royale Nightclub via Visa For Violet’s Flickr stream.
