The Songs for Slim benefit EP from The Replacements hits radio and digital outlets next week, but the first taste of the in-studio reunion landed on the web today, thanks to Pitchfork’s premiere of the new ‘Mats cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “I’m Not Sayin'” — one of four cover songs newly recorded by Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson.
An auction of limited-edition 10-inch copies of the EP last month raised more than $100,000 to help pay the medical expenses of ex-Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap, who suffered a debilitating stroke last year.
The EP features four songs by Westerberg and Stinson — their first ‘Mats recordings since putting down a pair of new tracks for the 2006 best-of set Don’t You Know Who I Think I Was?— as well as a single track from ex-drummer Chris Mars.
The Songs For Slim EP is out digitally March 5 and will be released as a commercial 12-inch on April 16.

My god. This is amazing.
Obviously not Mars on the drums, but still, 2/3 of the Pleased to Meet Me line-up of The ‘Mats is still a very good thing for a very good cause. Please boys, stick around a little longer maybe?
Oh man! Is there anything better than Paul’s voice?
To Jazzmaster:
Yes, there is something better than Paul’s voice: Paul’s voice in tandem with his guitar and Tommy’s bass and backing vocals. :-)
