Alt-country rocker Ryan Adams took to Twitter tonight to announce he’s producing — and playing drums on — a new album by The Lemonheads, with not only Juliana Hatfield returning to play bass, but with Evan Dando being joined by the band’s co-founder and original co-songwriter, Ben Deily of Varsity Drag, who left in 1989.
Last month, The Lemonheads with Hatifield — who played on the band’s best-known album, It’s a Shame About Ray — were announced as the opening act on a fall U.S. tour by The Psychedelic Furs beginning on Oct. 12 in St. Louis, Mo.
Tonight, Adams tweeted: “Looking forward to producing the new Lemonheads album this weekend with orig 2 songwriters Evan & Ben with @julianahatfield on bass” and “Playing drums on the Lemonheads records too. Dream come true… Back to the punker sounds.”
No other details about the project are known. While the band hasn’t officially announced work on a new album, Hatfield did retweet Adams’ two messages tonight.
In 2001, Dando and Adams had announced a supergroup called The Virgins that also was to have featured James Iha, formerly of The Smashing Pumpkins, but the project never went anywhere.

I’m very curious. There are a few days every year where “My Drug Buddy” is the greatest song ever written.
“It’s a Shame About Ray” was hardly their “punker” sounds. I stopped listening to anything after “Hate Your Friends.”
