Sex Pistols’ ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’ to be reissued in 4CD ‘super deluxe’ box set

The Sex Pistols only released a single studio album during their short initial career, but it’s certainly a landmark — and, fittingly, Universal Music this fall will commemorate the 35th anniversary of Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols by turning that 11-track album into a four-disc “super deluxe” box set.

As Super Deluxe Edition notes, a listing for the Never Mind the Bollocks box set has appeared on Amazon.co.uk with a Sept. 17 release date. No tracklist has yet been revealed, but a quick search finds Universal has it listed at its own online store with a £99.99 (about $157) retail price tag.

Furthermore, HMV.com shows a 2CD version also being released on the same day, but there’s no tracklist shown for that slimmed-down edition, either.

When not-counting albums I’ve sold and then re-bought a few years later, ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’ is the oldest CD in my collection. I remember reading that the original master tapes were lost, so I wonder if this’ll get the remastering treatment it could use.

  2. Too bad “Flogging A Dead Horse” was already used as an album title by the Pistols . . .

Of course, it’s not ironically funny this time around.

  3. Listing at $225.84 on the Canadian Amazon. Even if you subtract a whopping $19.39 for the original album (the same 2012 remaster) each extra disc is costing you $68.81. I can’t imagine what could be on those discs that they haven’t released before—and less that’s actually listenable. More terrible soundboard recordings of early live shows? Great rock’n’roll swindle indeed.

  4. I can see why John Lydon wants nothing to do with the reissues/anniversary.
Charging so much for bollocks isn’t very punk, is it?

  5. I heard the same thing nwilhelmy posted. The original EMI master tapes were destroyed. I hope they did find the real tapes and are not going to try to make it all just “louder”.

  6. Richard Branson needs to pay for his new island somehow!

  7. How many times can they reissue this record? Geesh…give it a break. I’m sure Lydon, Matlock, Cook and Jones are jumping on this “reissue” bandwagon as well, simply for the money. It’s absurd at this point.

  8. With the official UK record chart for Jubilee week about to be released, the Daily Mirror predicted that “God Save the Queen” would be number one. As it turned out, the record placed second, behind a Rod Stewart single in its fourth week at the top. Many believed that the record had actually qualified for the top spot, but that the chart had been rigged to prevent a spectacle. McLaren later claimed that CBS Records , which was distributing both singles, told him that the Sex Pistols were actually outselling Stewart two to one. There is evidence that an exceptional directive was issued by the British Phonographic Institute, which oversaw the chart-compiling bureau, to exclude sales from record-company operated shops such as Virgin’s for that week only.

  9. It will be very interesting to see what’s on offer for this rather high price. Something special?

  10. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s the Sex Pistols.
    Regards
