With the Pixies set to open the U.S. leg of their Doolittle 20th anniversary tour Wednesday in Los Angeles, we thought we’d offer American fans a bit of a preview of the band’s newly produced on-stage visuals.
For the trek — during which Black Francis and Co. are playing all of their classic 1989 album and its B-sides —Myles Mangino, the Pixies’ longtime lighting designer, and production designer Paul Normandale tapped filmmakers Judy Jacob, Tom Winkler, Brent Felix and Melinda Tupling to create a series of new films especially for the tour.
According to the band’s publicist:
“The films are projected onto a massive backdrop video screen to accompany 12 of the 21 songs that comprise the Pixies’ Doolittle set. In addition, four huge, undulating, eyeball-like spheres are flown just below the lighting rig and become part of the concert’s light show.”
Thanks to YouTube user samuntouchable, we can share, below, the backdrop films created for “Here Comes Your Man,” “Debaser,” “Crackity Jones” and “Monkey Gone To Heaven” (there’s also one posted for “Hey,” but it’s not embeddable), all filmed Oct. 6 at the Brixton Academy in London.
And in related news, the Pixies will perform “Here Comes Your Man” on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” on Friday.
