BACKSTORY: The Sonic Youth frontman this week delivers his first solo album since 2007’s Trees Outside the Academy, a nine-track, largely acoustic effort produced by Beck. The set features musical assistance from violinist Samara Lubelski, harpist Mary Lattimore, bassist Bram Inscore, drummer Joey Waronker and Beck himself.

BACKSTORY: The classic darkwave act returns this week with its first new album since 2009’s In Love We Trust, a 10-song collection that’s billed as featuring the band’s “signature melancholic sound” of electronic-tinged goth. Tracks include “Wake Up My Darling,” “My Reality,” “Deep Down I Died,” “She Did Not Answer” and “In Your Arms Again.”

ARTIST: Robin Guthrie
RELEASE: Emeralds
BACKSTORY: After releasing EPs in both 2009 and 2010 and a minimalist ambient album with occasional collaborator Harold Budd earlier this year, the Cocteau Twins co-founder returns this week with a brand-new 10-track album. Darla Records notes that Guthrie “quietly coaxes beauty out of layers of echoes” on the new work.

ARTIST: Einstürzende Neubauten
RELEASE: Silence is Sexy
BACKSTORY: The German avante-garde industrial act this week reissues, in the U.K. (it’s out July 1 in the U.S.), its 2000 album — an “unexpected exploration of silence” that the group proclaims is “the most complex work of the Neubauten.” This is a straight-up re-release without extra tracks or features.
