‘Our Band Could Be Your Life’ concert honors Replacements, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr

'Our Band Could Be Your Life'

Contemporary indie acts such as Ted Leo, St. Vincent and Dan Deacon will cover the music of their predecessors at this May’s Our Band Could Be Your Concert, a 10th anniversary celebration of Michael Azerrad’s ’80s underground bible “Our Band Could Be Your Life” and a tribute to the bands that book chronicled.

According to a news release on Azerrad’s website, “some of the best bands in contemporary indie music will play songs by each of the 13 bands in the book.” So far, the lineup includes Titus Andronicus playing The Replacements, tUnE-yArDs playing Sonic Youth and Wye Oak playing Dinosaur Jr among others (see full list below).

Azerrad writes: “For years, all kinds of people — musicians, people who run labels, concert promoters, journalists, whatever — have told me that they’ve been very inspired by “Our Band Could Be Your Life” and the bands it profiles, which is incredibly gratifying and totally unexpected.  The 10th anniversary was a great occasion for the current generation of bands to celebrate these pioneers.”

The concert is set for May 22 at the Bowery Ballroom; tickets go on sale Friday.

I assume the title for our band could be you life comes from the minutemen Lyric? “Our band could be your Life, real names be proof”? from History Lesson Part Two.
