The folks at Sub Pop Records today offered up the first taste of Dinosaur Jr frontman J Mascis’ forthcoming record Several Shades of Why — an acoustic collection that’s actually the guitar hero’s first-ever studio solo album — in the form of a free download of the track “Not Enough.”
You can download the 3:13-long song in exchange for your e-mail address via the widget below. The album is due out March 15, and was recorded at Bisquiteen Studios in Amherst, Mass. The 10-track disc is “nearly all acoustic,” and features guest turns by Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene, Kurt Vile and Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, among others.
In Sub Pop’s bio, Mascis says “there’s some fuzz” on the album, “but it’s acoustic through fuzz.” He also notes there are no drums: “Just one tambourine song, that’s it. It was a specific decision to not have drums. Usually I like to have them. But going drum-less pushes everything in a new direction, and makes it easier to keep things sounding different.”
